This program offers a brief biography of Walt Whitman. Bard of the common man. Whitman south to express America and his love for her in his poetry. Because American poetry had been an elitist art form and not a popular form of expression, Whitman had to create a whole new poetic language, using ordinary words and everday speech rhythms, to paint a personal verbal portrait of his country as it changed from an agrarian to a tumultuous industrial society. |
