February 16, 1944, the Battle of Truk Lagoon : World War II comes to a peaceful Micronesia atoll in the North Pacific, and over 40 Japanese ships are sunk to the bottom by the U.S. navy. Now half a century later, the battered hulks have been almost totally absorbed by the life in the lagoon. Deep under the water, the coral - encrusted silhouettes of the vessels are earily recognizable, but are now aquatic high - rises of new life. Sharks patrol for unwary prey, an octopus sits at the barrels of cannons; unexploded bombs and the bones of unfortunate sailors rest in the dark holes. Filming at depths of up to 180 feet, cinematographer Wolfgang Bayer takes you on tour of the undersea wreckage that has become a refuge for myriad life form |
