NOTES: Inner Mongolia, the abbreviated name of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region of China, is situated on China's north frontier, bordering Mongolia and Russia in the northwest. With an area of over 1.1 million square kilometer, it crosses China's "three norths" (northeast, northwest, and North China) with a direct distance of over 400 kilometer from east to west. Most of Inner Mongolia lies at an altitude of over 1,000 meters. The east is a vast grassland boasting famous natural pasturelands, while the west is home to a desert rich in natural resources. Dense forests and beautiful lakes are distributed over its land, adding soft beauty and a gentle feeling to the open and vast Inner Mongolia Plateau. A total of 49 ethnic groups including Mongolians, Han, Manchu, Hui, Daur and Ewenki people live together in peace in this vast land. Colorful ethnic charm is a bountiful feature of this well-known home of song and dance.
