NOTES: January 17, 1994. Without warning, the residents of Northridge, California are jolted awake by an earthquake that ultimately leaves 57 dead. One year later, a devastating quake rips apart Kobe, Japan, this time killing 5,400 - the country's worst catastrophe since World War II. Does an even more disastrous quake lurk beneath Los Angeles? Have we learned any lessons that could help us ease the toll? The aftermath in Kobe is shocking. Many hundreds died in blazing infernos, while thousands more were buried in the rubble of their homes. Seismologists say a similar fate could await L.A. or San Francisco - unless steps are taken to minimize such a loss.
