"Archaeological study, throught the examination of material remains that people have left behind the landcape, is a key way that we can learn about the human past. From June to August 2017, researchers conducted archaeological survey and excavation on Pingelap Atoll. During the project, they examined settlement of Pingelap Atoll, with a focus on food procurement and production systems. Results confirm human occupation of Pingelap Atoll occured by 1700-1550 cal BP, |

Though initial settlement of the atoll may have occured earlier. Evidence of early settlement include shell tools, ornamentsm and extensive fish remain, Analysis of recovered plant and animal remains is ongoing. Interviews addressing farming and cooking practices were also conducted to bettr understand the way that modern Pingelapese people cultivate their lanscape. |
