This film is the story of the Refalawasch, an ancient Micronesian culture. Known for navigating vast distances guided only by the stars and the swells of the sea, this resourceful people now faces the challenge of cultural survival. Colonized over the past 150 years by Spain, Germany, Japan, and now the United States, these newly naturalized U.S. citizens are struggling with rapid development and a massive influx of tourists and foreign workers. In "Lieweila, " the Refalawasch tell their story for the first time and explore how to preserve "Tipiyeew," their ancestors' spirit of one-mind, one-voice, and one-heart, in their changing world. |
