While Portia, the Christian heroine of The Merchant of Venice, may be more admirable than Beatrice, the main female character of Much Ado is probably the most interesting woman in all of Shakespeare's comedies. Beatrice is a modern woman in her staunch independence and refusal to be pigeonholed into a subordinate role within a male-dominated society. She is proud, and as her cousin Hero suggests, Beatrice's pride makes her appear hard. |
