Micronesians Abroad offers a look at islanders in their new homes in Honolulu, Pasadena, Corsicana, Orlando southern Missouri and Portland. This documentary takes us into the homes and workplaces of these transplanted Micronesians to reveal the struggles they face and the rewards they reap. Islanders everywhere have created new forms of communities to replace those they have left behind. The barbeques and sports competitions they host are occasions for bringing people together and bonding them into a network. This hour long video presents in islanders' own words, the struggles they face and the strategies they devise for coping with them. Micronesians are trying to retain their cultural and family ties with home, sometimes despite resistance from their own children. Micronesians Abroad suggests what it could mean for their country and for the emigrants themselves if they are able to do so. |
