Against the backdrop of Tara, the cotton plantation of the wealth O'Haras of Georgia, and the U.S. Civil War which began in 1864, the beautiful, conceited, arrogant, Scarlet O'Hara, is in love with melanie's (her trusting sister) husband, Ashley Wilkes, whom she hopes some day to have for herself. Wealthy and handsome, and also arrogant, Rhett Butler, pursues Scarlet for years, totally aware of her amorous feelings fo another man. He eventually does marry her after the loss of her two husbands - one, a childhood friend who she marries on the spur of the moment " to hurt" Ashley (so she thinks), and the other, the much older betrothed Kennedy who plans to marry Scarlet's younger sister as soon as he becomes rich (he does), and who is tricked by Scarlet into marrying him instead. .A bit of irony in the end. |
