NOTES: |
Ponapean swamp crabs were assigned to the species Scylla serrata with no basis found for further separation into species or varieties. The life cycle is described. A lunar periodicity was found to seaward movements of spawning females, with a peak around the moon. Except for these migrations, crabs usually did not move more than one km. Sexual maturity was reached at about 120 mm carapace width. Burrows were used primarily by male crabs for remporary shelter. Diet was omniverous. growth varied widely with individual specimens. |
