Teaching Reading in Mathematics has joined the Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: If Not Me, Then Who? (TRICA) series. The authors address both general reading skills and those specific skills that readers of mathematics text need, such as understanding specialized vocabulary terms and phrases and interpreting symbols and diagrams. The book addresses reading in mathematics in terms of three interactive elements that affect comprehension: the reader, the climate, and text features. Mathematics-specific examples (of the TRICA strategies) are included. The revised 2nd edition of Teaching Reading in Mathematics has been expanded to include: new ideas and new research on the three interactive elements of reading; more comprehensive sections on strategic processing and teaching; a discussion of assumptions about learning from a mathematics education perspective; "what is it?", "how could it be used in mathematics?" and "how to use it?" sections for each reading strategy; new reading strategies unique to teaching reading in mathematics; more examples at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. |
