NOTES: Zhouzhuang, a town at the border between Jiangsu Province and Shanghai Municipality, covers an area of only 0.47 square km. Sixty percent of the town's residential houses were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and there are close to 100 ancient style houses, over 60 brick carving gate-towers and 14 ancient bridges of various styles. It is a typical water town in the area south of the Changjiang River, with rivers functioning as streets, linked by bridges, and houses built on waterside. The town is like a paradise surrounded by modern urban civilization, with its unique architectural designs and the simple but refined, easy but not lazy lifestyle.
