NOTES: She Huo is the general name of the various the Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival, including singing and dancing, sacrifices to gods and prayers for good fortune, together with forms of entertainment. It originated from the reverence of the Chinese people thousands of years ago for the earth and fire. In traditional Chinese society, people mainly relied on farming so the earth is the basis for all human beings, and is a material foundation for the development of people's lives. Fire is the resource by which people can cook food and keep themselves warm, and an absolute necessity for human beings' survival and development. The purpose of offering sacrifices during She Huo celebration is to pray for good weather for crops, for the nation's stability and for the welfare of the people. Traditionally, She Huo celebrations came in many forms and had a very lively and exciting atmosphere. As time has passed, the ancient She Huo celebrations have taken on new content which expresses the merry, festive mood of ordinary people during these holiday times.
