NOTES: This film is the biographic story of Li Shutong, a celebrity in modern Chinese culture. Li Shutong, who was born to a rich family in Tianjin in 1880, and who died in 1942, as a young man was dedicated to exploring the rich content of Chinese culture, and was quite influenced by all that the Chinese nation suffered. Later, he went to Japan to learn oil painting and became quite accomplished in music, poetry and lyrics, seal carving, calligraphy, fine arts and acting. He opposed old habits and bad customs and participated in a series of advanced cultural organizations, thus promoting the development of new cultural activities. However the dark environment of his time destroyed Li Shutong's dream of bettering the world. In 1918, he went to Hupao Temple in Hangzhou to become a monk. After that, he devoted his life to studying Buddhist texts, hoping to salvage the world through promoting Buddhism, and became a great monk of the time.
