Why does sex exist, and what is its purpose and function? What decides whether an individual will be male or female? How are chromosomes, genes, and molecules involved in determining sex? In four lively lectures, two leading scientists in the field of sex determination research answer these intriguing questions. Using animations and demonstrations to drive home their points, they explore topics such as the role of sex, the evolution of the human sex chromosomes, human infertility, the advantages of studying sex in a simple organism such as C. elegans, and the mechanisms of sex determination in C. elegans. During each lecture, the scientists answer questions from high school students watching the talks. The DVD also contains biographies of the lecturers, who discuss why they chose careers in science and what they enjoy most about their work. |
