This is the premise of Fail Safe, as powerful, politically relevant and frightening today as ever. An alert is sounded at the U.S.'s complex defense system in Omaha; an unidentified object is heading toward the U.S. from the north and the strategic air command's bombers are routinely airliner, the bombers are ordered back to base. But due to coincidental computer mishaps, they don't get the message and fly on toward their target: Moscow. The President (Henry Fonda), unable to convince the pilot to turn back, pleads with the Soviet Premier to understand that the attack is a mistake. But Moscow is destroyed and the President is faced with an appalling decision that will appease the Soviets and prevent World War III. |
