NOTES: |
As the best-known of the four great performers in female roles in Chinese Peking Opera in 1930, Mr. Mei Lanfang, in response to the domestic all for cultural reform and thanks to the generous assistance of many close friends, was able to spare no expense for a six month tour of the United States. His performance set off a craze for Chinese Peking Opera during the economic depression in the United States, winning from Westerners much interest in and devotion to Chinese culture. His modesty and serenity despite his success and reputation indicated in a deeper sense that he was not merely the greatest musician in China, but also a cultural ambassador, strengthening cultural exchange between China and the West. |
