A NEW PUBLIC (30:00) Universal public education and mass communication created a new political life and leisure time, transforming the peasantry and expanding the middle class. Weber discusses Darwin's ideas in ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES and THE DESCENT OF MAN and explains how natural selection was mistakenly applied to economic and political models. FIN DE SIÁECLE (30:00) By the late 19th century, even working people had enough time and money to enjoy leisure and consumption, prompting a sharp reaction from members of the older privileged classes. |
