NOTES: THE DEATH OF THE OLD REGIME (30:00) While the American Revolution provided a much-admired model for Europeans with its compromise between conservatives and radicals, the French Revolution's unbalanced radical momentum turned violent. The featured paintings of Jacques-Louis David illustrate republican virtues and revolutionary aspirations. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION (30:00) Liberty, equality, and fraternity skidded into a Reign of Terror, followed by Napoleonic dictatorship. French military power reached its peak under Bonaparte, conquering most of continental Europe and ushering in a new mass conscription style of warfare, allied with revolutionary rhetoric.
