Isolated from the rest of the world, the Aztecs, Maya and Inca created sophisticated civilizations that in many ways paralleled ancient Mediterranean empires. God-like kings and a noble ruling class dominated splendid cities of temples and pyramids. Extensive trade was practiced between cities. The arrival of the Conquistadors caused near obliteration of their culture, but parts of it survive today in the mountains of Central America. |
