Poverty and violence seem to go hand in hand. Visit Inner - City Boston, site of a lesson on walking away from a fight; and listen to a young Hispanic talk about the machismo that underlies gang violence. From Ireland to India, violence is fueled by religion, nationalism, and racism. War used to require an eyeball confrontation. "Now, the human animal can fight wars from windowless rooms with upholstered chairs beneath the ground," says Donahue. "The result is no longer us against them, but the human race against itself." |
