Prince Karl is in love. But that's not cause for celebration in tiny Karlsburg. The future king's inamorata is not the princess he's supposed to wed in a state-arranged marriage. Instead, Karl has fallen for a Heidelberg barmaid! With the hoisting aloft of many a beer stein and much youthful camaraderie, the student prince provides regal musical entertainment. Ann Blyth and Edmund Purdom portray the star-crossed lovers. Longtime Hollywood favorites Lois Calhern, S.Z. Sakall and Edmund Gwenn add colorful support. Legendary choreographer Hermes Pan contributes superb musical staging. "Golden days,," "Serenade," "Deep in my heart," Drink, Drink, Drink" and more songs set to the music of Sigmund Romberg (the Hungarian composer who was the subject OF MGM's biopic deep in my heart) add aural pleasures to the film's many visual delights. And the prince's marvelous, flawless singing is provided by the star originally stated for the role: tenor Mario Lanza. |
