This video traces the evolution of the South Pacific Conference from the fist conference in Naisinu, Fiji in 1950 to the 36th conference held in Saipan, CNMI in 1996. Its evolution reflects the sweeping changes that occurred in the region. From dependent colonies to nationhood the conference today is a reflection of those 50 years of Pacific history. In the early days Ratu Sir Kamasese Mara of Fiji described the conference as "nothing more than a debating society" with powers only to advise the SPC on its work. Today the conference is the premier decision making body of the SPC boasting equal membership and is involved in the decisions affecting the work and scope ofr the SPC. |
