Micronesia: [videorecording] an introduction to the US Territories. |
DESCRIPTION: |
1 videocassette (31 min.) : sd., col. , 1/2 in. |
NOTES: |
Belau, Yap, Guam, Saipan, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, the Marshalls; thousands of islands spread across the northern Pacific. From the mysterious ruins of Nan Madol and the ancient latte stones of Guam to the nuclear testing sights of the Marshall Islands. The video examines the waves of colonization that swept over the island people; the Spanish missionaries, German traders, British whalers, Japanese and finally the Americans. This is a tale of 500 years of domination by foreign powers, of militarism, dependence and a struggle to regain control. The present challenges associated with militarism, tourism and political status are also explored. Indigenous rights, population growth, land rights and cultural loss are amongst the many issues presented. |
